The Moon travels around the Earth in an orbit.

So, speaking very roughly, for about half the time out of every 24 hours (most of which is the daytime) you can't see the moon because it is round the other side of the Earth (where for most of this period it is nighttime.

When the moon travels around to your side of the Earth it becomes visible. During this period it will be more visible the darker it gets as the light coming from our Sun which then reflects off of the moon will contrast more with the dark background.
