African Americans have fought in every war. In WWII, and possibly before, they were not provided with the needed equipment, but they showed up and fought.
As a newly formed African American regiment partly composed of former slaves, they wanted to prove their equality with the white troops, and actively fight for their newly won freedom.
African Americans were willing to fight in the war despite facing discrimination because they sought to prove their loyalty and worthiness as citizens, hoping that their service would pave the way for greater civil rights and recognition. Many believed that participating in the conflict would help combat racial stereotypes and demonstrate their commitment to the nation. Additionally, the promise of freedom and equality inspired many to join the fight, motivated by the desire to contribute to a cause larger than themselves. Ultimately, their participation was also a means of asserting their identity and agency in a society that often marginalized them.
He didn't want them to fight at first. But then he realized he needed the most people he could get to fight the British so he let them fight. Plus the British promised the African Americans their freedom if they fought with them. So there's another reason he wanted them.
