Christianity was able to spread because the Europeans sailed around the world. A famous and well-known example is Christopher Columbus who sailed around the world in 1492 and later went to islands of the Americas and later Europeans helped spread this religion.

A:In Roman times, Christianity was rarely persecuted by the pagan authorities. Scholars say that in the course of some three centuries, the total period of widespread, official persecution was no more than twelve years.

Christian tradition holds that persecution of Christians began under Emperor Nero, but Richard Holland (Nero: The Man Behind the Myth) says that the lack of an authentic and specific early Christian source for a mass persecution under Nero is very odd. He points out that even Acts of the Apostles makes not the slightest reference to the persecution by Nero of any Christians at Rome, let alone a great multitude of them. It appear to be complimentary about the Romans as compared wirh Jews. The third-century Church Father, Origen, writing (Contra Celsum, 3.8 ) of the total of Christian martyrs up to his own time, in Rome and elsewhere, states that there were not many - and that it was easy to count them.

In more recent times, Edward Gibbon (The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) reports that the ecclesiastical writers of the fourth and fifth centuries ascribed to the earlier, pagan magistrates the same degree of implacable and unrelenting zeal which they now felt against the heretics and the pagans of their own times.

Christianity spread in the general absence of persecution, although it had still only converted around ten per cent of the population of the Roman Empire by the time of Emperor Constantine. One Constantine and his Christian successors were in power, unrelenting persecution did become a fact of life, but it was the persecution of the pagans, not the Christians.

Why did the Romans try to stop the spread of Christianity?

The Romans did not try to stop the spread of Christianity. There were alternations between periods of toleration and periods of persecution. Some Roman emperors thought that Christianity was a threat to the Roman state because many bureaucrats and soldiers converted to Christianity. The Romans saw their state as being interlinked with Roman Religion. The persecutions were aimed mainly at the civil service and the Christian clergy, rather than Christianity as such. The last and worse persecution, the Great Persecution, failed because it was difficult to implement, because of the resistance of the Christians and because it undermined the stability of the empire. After that, the emperors endorsed Christianity, favored it over other religions and promoted it. Eventually, Christianity became the state religion of the empire. With imperial support, the spread of Christianity accelerated.

How did the decline of Rome help spread Christianity?

Christianity did not contribute to the collapse of the empire. It contributed to a greater sense of unity and more stability. Christianity became the religion of the masses in the empire. It was declared a tolerated religion because the great persecution of Christians by Diocletian had created serious unrest. Once the state acknowledged Christianity, unrest ceased and the state regained legitimacy in the eyes of the Christian masses.
