Archeologists group early humans into three groups based on how they moved around. (1) In the Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) Era, most family and clan groups were hunter-gatherers, looking for food. Since homo sapiens were omnivorous (they could eat meat and plants), they would eat the animals and plants in an area, then move on when they needed more. (2) In the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) Era, most clan and tribal groups were nomads, taking their food with them from place to place. Nomads know where the best food for their herded animals (sheep or goats). These places changed with the seasons, and nomads often followed regular migrating patters each annual cycle. Some early agriculture was practiced when crops were planted looking forward to their return in a later season. (3) In the Neolithic (New Stone Age) Era, most continents had tribal and national groups which developed an Agricultural Revolution. At first by great rivers that could provide water sources for irrigation systems year-round, early man could stay in the same place. Instead of moving by the seasons, they could change crops in the seasons to ripen at different times of the year. With the coming of the Agriculture Revolution, there could be surplus food, more occupational specialization, larger populations, and ever extended trade with surrounding peoples, whether other settlements, nomads or hunter-gatherers.

They traveled because the early people were nomads. They followed large herds of animals such as deer.
