Because large-scale applications built by a small dev team for free don't have the widespread acceptance and usage that the ones built and marketed by the big guys do, and they also usually don't have all the features either.

Then there are those who steal software from particular companies because it fun and how can anyone afford to buy the software and anyway - no-one gets hurt if I steal the software, right.
Some of the most popular software aroud started out as freeware. When the developers found how popular the software actually is then the second version is payware. After a few versions and a feedback system that many multi-nationals do envy the current version is slick, fast, only has features that the paying public wants and works multi-plaform.
