There are many good reasons as to why biodiversity should be preserved. One strong reason as to why I believe biodiversity should be protected has been the immense amount of beneficial substances and products that we can gain, and have gained, from the many species of organism found in nature. We rely on biodiversity for the production of medicines. Farmers rely on biodiversity when a disease devastates one type of crop. For instance, remember the Ireland potato famine, where only a few types of potato were grown and relied upon. Approximately one million died and a million more emigrated from the country when the potato became diseased. If more potato species had been around, there could have been one, a few, or even plenty more that had the ability to resist the disease, thus, preventing starvation.

Many people assume that biological diversity doesn't concern them. However, these individuals do not realize how interdependent all species are upon one another. Maintaining the biodiversity of the planet will ensure a higher quality of life for all species of the planet, including humans. Since the human species has proliferated the planet, and we now occupy many different kinds of ecysostems/biomes, our health as a species is dependent on the health of the biosphere (all of the areas on Earth that support life). After all, we are not exempt from the health of the planet, as we are all animal residents of this spaceship as well, only with an immensely increased ability to affect it due to industrial/technological advancement. We should simply ask: do we want our home to be a desolate wasteland, or a lush garden with an immense variety of fruits and other organisms?

How do you think competition from humans affects biodiversity?

Human competition suppresses biodiversity. Human activity destroys habitat leading to the extinction of many species.

Why is biodiversity important?

It is the biodiversity on Earth that allows (at the moment) for animals, plants and humans to share the planet- if one species is destroyed, several, maybe even hundreds more, may follow.Biodiversity is important because certain organisms have economic value (such as rainforest plants being made into medicine), they have value to the ecosystem (think of their spot on a food web), and they are a source of natural beauty and recreation.Sometimes diseases or insects can wipe out a food crop. Having a variety of plants helps prevent widespread dead plants.Biodiversity is the representation of the millions of different species on the earth and the genetic diversity within these species. Biodiversity is important because humans depend on animals and other species to live and grow and much as animals and other species depend on humans to live and grow. It's important because it is based on the evolution of other species.

How does biodiversity effect humans?

Humans are part of biodiversity. Biodiveristy provides the air we breathe (the oxygen, the nitrogen, and the carbon dioxide), the water we drink (without life on Earth, our planet would be much colder), the food we eat, and the soil on which our crops grow. It pollinates plants, and clears pollution. It provides cotton and wool, firewood and timber and wax, aspirins and quinine. It provides beauty and artistic inspiration and spiritual solace. Think of living on the moon, without breathing aparatus. Biodiversity makes life possible.

How important is it to maintain a propane fireplace?

Since a malfunction could, in theory, blow up your house, set it on fire, or kill you from monoxide poisoning, I think it would be high on my "Important" list.
