Largely by surprise. Germany did not expect to be able to get through the French like they did. France was arguably the strongest country at this point in the war (America had not joined yet). Germany was scared of the French military ready to invade Germany and they just decided to attack and it resulted in a huge unexpected victory. French and English forces that were guarding the border had no time to attack the unexpected German force and consequently a large part of France was occupied by the Germans. Once the English heard of this they immediately began preparing themselves because Germany with that much luck would soon attack England. This was stopped by D-day operations in which Americans, French and British forces forced the Germans out of France. The most important factor in the loss of the battle for France was that the German Army simply, and unexpectedly, outflanked the French Maginot Line (and rendered it completely useless) by invading Belgium and the Netherlands to the North and sweeping into northern France, causing the heroic British evacuation from the beaches at Dunkirk and the trapping of what was left of the French Army into the southern half of their own country.

No one can learn French fluently. Parisians do not think the people of Orleans speak correct French and the people of Orleans do not think Parisians speak correct French. None of them think Quebecois have any idea how the language should be spoken. So get yourself a computer program and start learning it incorrectly. Someone will tell you that you are speaking it wrong. That will happen if you are either foreign or native born.
'bacon' means the same in both French and English. This is an old French word modeled from Germanic. The French word was forgotten and came back through English, and most French think is is a fully English word.
I think its the same as in English!

I think the English started "borrowing" the words that the Vikings and French spoke.
New Caledonia was colonized by the French or used for testing by the French, I think.
I think you are asking about the Mississippi River and particularly the Gulf port of New Orleans. The US had free access to most of the River, but the Spanish and later the French controlled New Orleans and the port. The French gained control of New Orleans from Spain via a secret treaty on October 1, 1800.
Madune what do you think!
When I think of the French influence in the States, I think of Louisiana and of the old fur trading areas up north. I know the name of the capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge, means Red Stick in English. Des Moines, St. Louis, Illinois, and Detroit came from French as well (All of their pronunciations have been altered in English).
