1858 was an off-year election. The Republicans gained six Senate seats and 26 House seats , thereby showing greater strength as a national party. Lincoln was defeated in his bid for a Senate seat, but his campaign debates attracted national attention and helped him get the Republican nomination and win the election as President in 1860. If Lincoln had been elected to the Senate in 1858, he might not have wanted to run for President in 1860.
