As He died to make man Holy, Let us Die to Make Men Free! a line in the Battle Hymn of the Republic- Glory, Glory, Hallelujah! etc. This is the obious tie in in the Civil War drama. as secondary item might be the US Flag ( Old Glory) but this is doubtful.

When the Southern Congress passed an act to return blacks to captivity, and to execute all white officers, the men of the 54th were offered full discharges. Upon learning that not even one man wanted a discharge, Col. Robert Shaw exclaimed in a whisper "Glory Hallelujah!" This is also one of the most moving scenes in the movie.

When the civil war started the men who enlisted to fight thought it would be a glorious adventure. Years ago the company sent me the film and teaching materials about the film and this is one of the things they pointed out. If my memory serves me right in the first few scenes there is a line of a character that states they will find glory. After the first battle of Bull Run they realized just how bloody and awful war was going to be. Men threw down their guns and ran screaming from the battle field. There was no glory.
