According to historian Jonathan Smith: "the prefix of S.S. is correct for the lifeboats, as at the time, Titanic was not in service. Upon entering service, Titanic was given R.M.S. to establish her as a Royal Mail steamer but the lifeboat plaques kept with the S.S. to assign her as a steam ship."
