Having a bowel movement can cause discomfort or even pain, especially if your stool (bowel movement; feces) is harder than usual. "BMs" should be formed, but soft. Those exit without much difficulty. But if you don't drink enough water, the BM can feel hard, jagged, and is harder to push out.

Also, gas in the intestines, and normal peristalsis (muscles moving in the intestines), both can cause discomfort or even cramp-like pain. Of course, gassy pain often accompanies having a bowel movement because the intestines are hard at work to push out the feces. Rubbing your belly, or putting a heating pad against your belly, can help relieve gassy pain.

If pain is severe, occurs frequently, or you see blood in the toilet, consult your doctor.
