Probably cause by a worn out/defective brake light switch.

Check your brake pads.
You probably have a bad ground. Check the grounds on the brake lights.
Look at the uper end of the brake pedal under the dash area

it is under the hood right in the corner nearest the drivers door and it takes DOT 4 Brake fluid
Hub seal is leaking
the brake fluid level is low in your master cylinder, add some brake fluid and the light will stay off
I had this same problem with my !995 Galant. It turned out to be the alternator.
There could be many causes to a brake light not working. It is best to replace the fuse, and the bulb and check the wiring.
