Short answer: If they leave you, they weren't your friends.

Long answer: Relationships are fluid. The reasons they end are as varied as the reasons they began. It's important to understand why you were friends in the first place. Common interests? Mutual attraction? Kindred spirits? People change. The things they are looking to get from relationships change. I will assume you are closer to the beginning of your life than the end, and it is common for younger people to obtain a measure of their self-worth from the number of friends they have. That's dangerous. I am closer to the end of my life than the beginning and I can tell you that if you wind up with two or three very close friends, you can consider that a success. Everyone else is an acquaintance.
