Sounds like some kind of intermittent electrical short

Check bulbs they are double filamented smaller for brake lights larger for tailights Check fuses Check stop light switch
check fusable link in wiring harness this is between battery and firewall if this is burned out ,you have a serious electrical problem if not that, check computer
Check your gas cap.....My check Engine light always comes on if it is loose or not on at all.

The GMC dash tail and parking lights are on a different fuse from the brake lights. Check the fuses for a possible blown fuse.
just remove the battery cable for about 5min then put it back. that should reset the check engine light.
Check the brake light switch. It's probably attached to the brake pedal, under the dashboard.
check the thermostat see if there is one, if there is it may be stuck open.
unhook the battery for abt. 30 sec and re connect

if no warning and it just shuts down but dash lights and radio light up check ignition switch
