A doctor would not prescribe an antibiotic for any kind of virus. An antibiotic only kill bacteria, not viruses.

If you have a throat virus, than your doctor would have prescribed something else that will relieve your symptoms and slow down or stop the virus.

If you were prescribed an antibiotic, you must have a bacterial infection of some kind. The antibiotic will help your immune system fight the bacteria.

Either under pressure from the uninformed patient who thinks that is what they need or because the doctor wants to prevent or treat a secondary bacterial infection that often occurs with virus infections. Bacterial pneumonia can superimpose on lungs already in trouble from a viral infection, for example.

Over-prescribing of antibiotics is one of the factors that caused us to have serious antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections that are very hard to cure. The lesson from this is: Don't ask the doctor for antibiotics, let her decide when they are needed.

doctors shouldn't over prescribe antibiotics because

people can form antibiotic resistance. This means that if a person keeps taking the same antibiotic medicine too much their body will get used to it, and be able to withstand the effects of the medicine.

Viral infections can weaken the immune system making it easier to acquire a bacterial infection... given antibiotics, the body is defended by bacterial infections so the virus can wear off.

You visited a doctor because you have bad cold What if your doctors prescribe medicines for you but not antibiotics Why not?

Antibiotics do not cure the common cold since the common cold is a viral illness. Antibiotics are for bacteria, not viruses, so it would not make sense for a physician to prescribe an antibiotic for a cold and would actually be irresponsible if the physician did this.
