Her dad gave her the diary for her 13th birthday. She wrote in it every few days during the time they were hiding. Everyone says if she survived she would publish the book which came true that's why she didn't write the people she was hiding with their real name. But mostly what the diary (which Anne called "Kitty") was to her was a best friend - she could tell her diary anything she was thinking, as she had no one else in her life she trusted enough to do that.

∙ 13y agoAfter hearing a broadcast from Radio Orange in London, requesting that Dutch citizens save letters, diaries and the like to "help tell the tale", Anne was inspired to begin editing and re-writing her diary for publication. There were parts of it she would leave out, of course, but her re-written version she intended for possible publication someday. Otto Frank was opposed at first to publishing her diary, but it was Anne's wish to be published that ultimately led him to do so.

∙ 13y agoAnne's intention was just to write a journal like girls her age, and she enjoyed writing. She didn't expect it to be used as a literary goldmine for Holocaust information or as a sob story. She just wrote to get her thoughts in order. Maybe her father had some ulterior motive in giving her the journal, but that is never mentioned.
