Darth is the traditional title of a Sith Lord or Master. The reason for the use of Darth is partially because it's a derivative of an old forgotten language. It basically means "dark" or "death".
It was also once banned by Lord Kaan's brotherhood of darkness because it represented too much competition within the Sith.
