Actually the verse says not to make any image of anything that is in heaven.

It is good to look at the context of the verse to clarify the meaning. In this part of Exodus God is speaking to the nation of Israel. The first commandment He gives is:

Exo 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before Me.

Then He tells them:

Exo 20:4 "You shall not make for yourself a carved (graven) image-any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

And the following verse says why - not only themanufacture of idols but also worship of themis forbidden.

Exo 20:5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,

My bible at the beginning says - 1. Thou shalt not have strange gods before Me.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven thing.

This is to the Catholics who have changed this commandment.

They have idols in there church of in heaven above, say a statue of Our Lady, She is in Heaven above which the commandment says you should not worship this statue.

I was a Catholic. I have a a Catechism off 1960 in front of me,and it is different all together. A priest would say this is to remind us of Our Lady, but we don`t need a statue (Idol) to remind us of Her. You are also right in what you say.

What does graven mean in the statement You shall not make any graven image?

The word graven means to cut or to shape. (Nowadays, we say "engraved".) The Lord tells us not to make any images of gods to worship. Even an image of Christ should not be worshiped. The image may give us a point of focus but only in spirit may we give true worship.

Why no images of Jesus?

Probably due to Exodus 20:4,5 which reads, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven (carved) image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children of the third and fourth generation of them that hate me."

What does 'thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image' mean?

This means that we are not to make any image from the material of earth such as wood, stone or metal and then worship it as you would God. None of these images can change anything in a persons life or on earth or in Heaven.

Why would the Lord command that the Israelites make a graven image of a snake to touch in the wilderness so they wouldn't die from snake bites if they're not supposed to make graven images?

The Israelites were not to make graven images for themselves, under their own initiative. This especially applied in relation to making images as part of heathen idolatry, since there was for Israel to be only one true God. The snake on the pole did apparently later become an illegitimate object of veneration and was destroyed as such by good King Hezekiah. In the context it was a symbol of faith in the one true God. Incidentally, the Israelites were merely to 'look and live'. They did not actually have to touch the snake on the pole, as in some cases they may have been too far away to reach it in time or already close to death from a bite. The command to make graven images was also a permanent prohibition (even still applying today) whereas the snake on the pole was a temporary concession as a test of faith. Quite possibly some would not have believed that God meant what He said about the snake, not bothered to look in faith and so perished.

Do Protestants use statues for prayer?

Not if they're good protestants. Depending on what edition you have, statues for prayer violates either the 2nd or 3rd Commandment. Thou shall not make graven images and bow down and worship them. Some versions forbid even making a pile of rocks.

How did art change peoples lives?

De 5:8 Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: Although given in several scriptures, the above is abundantly clear. As it has been shown through the centuries, the heathen side of man has little to no faith in that that is now seen, so the natural propensity is to desire an object, a picture, a statue to make what one worships more "real". The Lord God of Heaven and earth, the creator and savior will not fit in a picture frame, a mold or any such thing. Such belittles the very concept of God, bringing the idea of God closer to man's level. The scripture reveals that by faith we see and not by sight.

What is the first comandment?
