The play The Murder of Gonzago had a plot quite similar to the account the Ghost had given of the murder of Hamlet Sr. With a few tweaks, it was so similar that it reminded Claudius of his murder which was what Hamlet intended.

What events happened act iii of hamlet?

Act 3 is a busy act in Hamlet. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern make a report to the king, and he and Polonius plan to spy on Hamlet. They place themselves in a hidden space with Ophelia as bait. Hamlet strolls along and makes his "To be or not to be" speech. He sees Ophelia and they have a very peculiar conversation which ends with Hamlet getting angry with her and accusing her of prostituting herself (figuratively). Ophelia thinks he has lost his mind ("O what a noble mind is here o'erthrown") but Claudius draws the opposite conclusion. That's Scene 1. In Scene 2, Hamlet meets up with the players, and after telling them how to do their job, asks Horatio to watch Claudius during the play. The play is then performed with Hamlet being terrifically rude both to the actors and to his fellow audience members. Claudius spots that the play is all to similar to his murder of Hamlet Sr. and demands that it stop. As he exits, Hamlet is exultant: the Ghost has been vindicated! Rosencrantz and Guildenstern show up and tell Hamlet to visit his mother. On the way, Hamlet spots his uncle praying. We hear part of the prayer and know that Claudius is feeling guilt for murdering his brother. Hamlet is about to kill him then hesitates, deciding to wait until Claudius is doing something sinful. Nevertheless he says he could "drink hot blood" and he is now going to give his mother a talking-to. In Scene four, Hamlet arrives at his mother's bedroom and begins chastising her. Polonius, hiding behind a curtain, hears and echoes Gertrude's cries for help. Hamlet, believing his moment to kill Claudius has come at last, kills Polonius thinking that he is the king. He then launches into a long tirade to his weeping mother, and is only stopped by the appearance of the Ghost. Gertrude is persuaded that Claudius is a murderer and agrees to help Hamlet, and Hamlet drags the corpse of Polonius off.

Why is Hamlet bothered by the fact that one of the actors is able to read about death of King Priam with such passion?

Hamlet asks himself why, if an actor can get emotional about a fictional person he doesn't even know, Hamlet cannot get just as emotional about his own father.

Why do you think Shakespeare included a play within a play?

I believe shakespeare was making a point about how life itself is a play. It could also be a sort of joke, like when a television show makes a joke about itself...like on 'Everybody Loves Raymond'...in one episode Ray and Debra are having an argument and Ray says "Are the kids even mine? For all i know they could be the mailman's!" The joke being that all three children are blonde...but both parents (Ray and Debra) have dark hair, which happens because sometimes the best actors for a series dont always have matching hair color or appearances. It's what people call "tongue-in-cheek".

Was shakespeares theatre a quiet experience at the time?

Theatre in Shakespeare's time was not a quiet experience. It was more like going to a screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show: people yelled at the actors and threw things at the stage. The performance of Pyramus and Thisbe in A Midsummer Night's Dream gives you some idea of how vocal audiences could be. So does The Death of Gonzago in Hamlet; in the middle Hamlet yells at the actors "Is this a prologue or the posy of a ring?"

What does Hamlet get the actors to do?

Hamlet plans to use the actors to prove whether or not Claudius was guilty. This would be achieved by instructing the actors to portray the murder of Gonzago, which would make Claudius feel guilty if he did indeed commit the murder.

How does Hamlet plan to catch the conscience of the king?

This line is from Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2. Prince Hamlet has been told by the ghost of his father, King Hamlet, that Prince Hamlet's uncle, King Claudius, murdered his own brother, King Hamlet. Claudius then married the dead King Hamlet's wife and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude. Since Hamlet does not know if the ghost is truly his father and telling the truth, he devises a plan that he believes will prove if what the ghost has said is true. Actors have come to perform at Elsinore Castle for King Claudius and Queen Gertrude. Hamlet asks them to use his altered version of the play, in order to "catch the conscience of the King." The alteration tells the story of a Queen whose husband is murdered by poison. The poisoner then woos the Queen with gifts. Though she rejects him for awhile, in the end she accepts his love. Hamlet plans to watch Claudius' reaction to the altered portion of the play, and discern from that response if Claudius is guilty. His fear of King Claudius' power, and his desire to shame his mother, Queen Gertrude, is the reason for Hamlet's indirect method of accusing the King. If Hamlet's plan doesn't work, he will still be free to pursue other possibilities.
