This line is from Hamlet, Act 2, Scene 2.
Prince Hamlet has been told by the ghost of his father, King Hamlet, that Prince Hamlet's uncle, King Claudius, murdered his own brother, King Hamlet. Claudius then married the dead King Hamlet's wife and Prince Hamlet's mother, Queen Gertrude. Since Hamlet does not know if the ghost is truly his father and telling the truth, he devises a plan that he believes will prove if what the ghost has said is true.
Actors have come to perform at Elsinore Castle for King Claudius and Queen Gertrude. Hamlet asks them to use his altered version of the play, in order to "catch the conscience of the King." The alteration tells the story of a Queen whose husband is murdered by poison. The poisoner then woos the Queen with gifts. Though she rejects him for awhile, in the end she accepts his love. Hamlet plans to watch Claudius' reaction to the altered portion of the play, and discern from that response if Claudius is guilty. His fear of King Claudius' power, and his desire to shame his mother, Queen Gertrude, is the reason for Hamlet's indirect method of accusing the King. If Hamlet's plan doesn't work, he will still be free to pursue other possibilities.
"The play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king."
Hamlet arranges for the travelling players to play the Murder of Gonzago which is a play "something like the murder" of his uncle, and which Hamlet, by the addition of a few extra lines, will make even more like it. He and Horatio will be watching Claudius closely. "If he but blench" (says Hamlet) "I know my course."
The plan was to stage a moving theatrical production of a similar murder, in the hope that Claudius would be emotionally affected by the artistry. Instead, Hamlet can't contain himself and blurts out the whole plot. Claudius cancels the rest of the play once he realizes where it's going, and is clearly very affected.
Hamlet means that he will figure out if Claudius is the guilty party by having the actors, act a scene like the death of his father pointed out by the ghost. Through doing this he will look at Claudius during that scene in the play and if he looks guilty he knows the ghost was true but if he doesn't then he knows that the ghost is false.
He's expecting that, if Claudius is in fact guilty of the murder of Hamlet Sr., and he sees a play which is just like his murder, he will be startled, and upset. This will confirm what the Ghost told Hamlet.
Hamlet plans to stage a play in which the murder of his father - by his uncle - will be reenacted.
"The play's the thing wherein I'll catch the conscience of the king."
Polonius plans to tell Claudius. Polonius believes that it is love that is driving Hamlet insane.
hamlet avenged his father by stabbing his uncle who married his fathers wife to get the throne. hamlet did this because his fathers ghost visited and told him that hamlets uncle (his fathers brother) killed him... in the end everyone ended up dying
2 parts to this question... To get rid of Hamlet, King Claudius first sends Hamlet to Englan along with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern with a letter that requests putting Hamlet to death. This plan fails because Hamlet finds out and switches the letter resulting in the death of its carrier (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern). When he comes back.. the King tries to get rid of him by 1. Putting poisin in his drink (but fails and Gertrude ends up drinking it). 2. Poisining Laertes' sowrd so he would kill Hamlet while fighting, and he succeeds. (But of course that happens after Hamlet finds out and kills the King)
The players enable a number of things: 1. It makes the audience, who were fans of Kyd's Spanish Tragedy which also contained a play within a play, feel that they were on familiar ground. 2. It gives Hamlet an opportunity to comment of the state of theatre in England at the time. 3. It helps the plot along by giving Hamlet a device to test Claudius's guilt. 4. It enables Shakespeare to contrast the formal and stilted language of The Murder of Gonzago with the more natural language of Shakespeare's play. 5. It provides a device where the characters reveal a great deal about themselves while commenting on the play they are watching.
Claudius plans to send Hamlet to England with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern bearing a secret death warrant.
Claudius begins to feel remorseful for killing his brother (Hamlet's father and former king); which is good for Hamlet, since this had been his plan."The play's the thing, In which I'll catch the conscience of the king!"
The first plan for killing Hamlet which we know about is to send him to England to deliver orders to the English authorities that they should put Hamlet to death.
Polonius plans to tell Claudius. Polonius believes that it is love that is driving Hamlet insane.
Please rephrase this question. As it stands it sounds like Claudius took a cab downtown to Ernie's Pawnshop to get a loan on a map owned by Hamlet. What other kind of plan did Hamlet have? Hamlet is famous for not making plans, of not thinking out any practical scheme to accomplish his revenge.
hamlet avenged his father by stabbing his uncle who married his fathers wife to get the throne. hamlet did this because his fathers ghost visited and told him that hamlets uncle (his fathers brother) killed him... in the end everyone ended up dying
His first plan is to send Hamlet off to England along with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. R & G will have orders to have the English execute Hamlet. That doesn't work out, however, so Claudius then proposes to make use of Laertes's desire to avenge his father's death, and have Laertes kill Hamlet. Or if that doesn't work out, Claudius proposes to poison Hamlet.
In "Hamlet", Polonious devises a plan to test his theory that Hamlet is madly in love with Ophelia, and since she is ignoring him, he is depressed. He plans to arrange for Hamlet and Ophelia to meet. He will hide close by and ease-drop to determine if he is correct in his assumption.
Hamlet was going to act crazy until he got an opportunity to revenge himself on Claudius. Not much of a plan, really.

His conscience would not let him agree to the illegal plan. The thief later had a guilty conscience and returned the stolen items to the church.
Claudius advises Hamlet to stop mourning his father's death and start celebrating the marriage between him and Hamlet's mother. He calls Hamlet's attitude"stubborn and unmanly." A little insensitive considering Hamlet's father has only been dead for 2 months at the time.
