Like every country, Israel has safe and not-so-safe places. In general, you'd want to stay away from the boundaries, where Israel borders with hostile neighboring countries (pretty much all of them). In the cities, you feel like you're in London or Paris ... you're just as safe as you would be there, and a whole lot safer than in many other world capitals. The countryside is also fine ... again, away from the borders.
