Diamond gives several examples that New Guineans might be, on average, smarter than Westerners. First, Diamond compares the natural selection in Western society versus New Guinean society. He explains that while only the smarter individuals get to pass on their genes in New Guinea tribes, there is no "natural selection" based off intelligence in Western society. Another reason Diamond explains is that while Western children spend most of their day being passively entertained by a TV or radio which does not highly stimulate the brain, "New Guinea children…spend almost all of their waking hours actively doing something, such as talking or playing with other children or adults" (Diamond 21).
