Why does Jesus require that you eat his flesh and drink his blood and why not just one or the other?

Jesus had said they you should eat bread and drink wine. This is in The Bible.
ASKER: This answer pretty much just restates my question.
What I am hoping for is an answer that explains the significance of each separate item and why we need to ingest each and not just one. Please refrain from an answer such as, "Because Jesus said so". Thank you.
