Jesus had said they you should eat bread and drink wine. This is in The Bible.

ASKER: This answer pretty much just restates my question.

What I am hoping for is an answer that explains the significance of each separate item and why we need to ingest each and not just one. Please refrain from an answer such as, "Because Jesus said so". Thank you.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 55. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 56. Here is one:Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Why is Holy Communion central to your identity as Catholic Christians?

The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is the actual Body and Blood of Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ physically present among us. Without the Eucharist, there would be no Church. The Church is the Mystical Body of Christ which depends for its existence on the Real Body of Christ in the Eucharist. When we receive Holy Communion worthily we are receiving Our Blessed Lord and becoming Him. This was His Command: "So Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in Me, and I in him.'" (St. John 6:53-56)

Do catholics eat human flesh and drink blood?

No, they do not. This is a misunderstanding of the sacrament of Holy Communion.

Why does Christ want us to receive His body and blood at communion?

He doesn't. This is something that has been invented by religion.Jesus told His disciples (and all believers) to eat bread and drink wine to remember Him:Luke 22:19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me."Luke 22:20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.Jesus didn't say receive His body or blood. Also no where does the Bible teach that the bread and wine become Jesus' body and blood when a person takes communion. In John Chapter 6 Jesus says:John 6:53 Then Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.If you look at the context of the whole chapter you will see that Jesus is not talking literaly but figuratively comparing salvation that God offers through Jesus' death with the manna God provided for the nation of Israel in the wilderness.By comparing verse 54 with verse 47, we can see that to eat His flesh and to drink His blood means to believe on Him. In verse 47 we read that "He who believes in Me has everlasting life." In verse 54, we learn that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood has eternal life. To eat His flesh and to drink His blood is to believe on Him.
