The Blessed Virgin Mary became important to humanity before there was a Catholic Church when, through her humble and complete obedience to God's Will, she turned her entire life over to God and bore the savior of the human race. Without the Blessed Virgin Mary, for which all of humanity had been waiting for thousands of years, Our Blessed Lord would not have come and redeemed us. Thus, from the very first, Our Blessed Lady has been pivotal in salvation history, necessary in that God chose her was His way of saving the world. This is where her title Mediatrix of all Grace comes from. Mother is rightly named Mother of the Church, as the Church is the Body of Christ, and Mary, as the Council of Ephesus proclaimed in A.D. 431 Mary the Mother of God (theotokos) against Nestorius, Bishop of Constantinople
Roman Catholics believe she is the Mother of God.
Roman Catholic AnswerCatholics follow Jesus in all things. He loved and obeyed His mother above any other human being while He was on earth. He gave her to all of us, through the apostle, John, while he hang on the cross. We honor her as His mother, and pray for her intercession. We follow The Bible, in which she says, in her Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55) "all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me..."To put in the words of Peter Kreeft, the author of one of the new Catechisms:
"... because everything in the Catholic religion exists for the single purpose that was most clearly and perfectly fulfilled in her: to conform us to the image of her Son, to make humanity Christlike. Mary shows us the summit of God's success in his saint-making business and also the summit of humanity'ssuccess, how high humanity can rise under God's grace." from Catholic Christianity by Peter J. Kreeft
