good question. this has been debated for awhile now. some proof that misty likes ash is:
in the episode from kanto where ghost Pokemon made ash into a ghost, when the fog came in, ash and misty instantly hold hands leaving Brock in the dark.
in that same episode, misty was the one to worry about ash. all Brock did was shrug.
in most Times when someone yells ash' s name, it's misty. Brock sometimes joins in or yells pikachu.
in diamond and pearl, when dawn wants to use the fishing lure misty gave to ash, he refuses to let her.

But you want WHY. Well, I guess it might have something to do with the fact that ash "borrowed" then wrecked her bike to save pikachu. I know that was her excuse for following him in the kanto through jhoto regions. She liked that ash cared so much about pokemon.
