Moaning Myrtle is a real character in the series, but she does not exist in real life. Moaning Myrtle is a ghost who haunts the girls bathroom on the second floor - where she died after looking into the eyes of the Basilisk.

The ghost is called Moaning Myrtle. She was a student of Hogwarts, who died 50 years before the main events of the book. It turns out she was killed by Slytherin's Monster, when the Chamber of Secrets was opened 50 years ago.
At the end of the Deathly Hollows, the trio ends up at Hogwarts. However, Moaning Myrtle does not appear in this book. Neverthless, another ghost plays a significant part.
