He is the first to attempt to string the bow, while the disguised Odysseus watches; Leodes could have refused. Odysseus spares the bard and the herald at Telemachus' urging, but Telemachus does not say anything about Leodes. Odysseus himself, just before he kills him, says Leodes, being a priest, probably prayed that Odysseus would not come home before Leodes could marry Penelope (22.321-25), not an unreasonable inference surely. Given the rough justice whereby Odysseus kills all 108 suitors and a bunch of handmaids, to have spared Leodes would have been odd.
