If this is a standard shift transmission, some one may have put the incorrect trans fluid in to it. Drain and refill with correct fluid, check your drivers manual for correct trans fluid.
There are a couple of reasons why a 1993 Mercury Villager is hard to shift. One reason could be a gear shift cable. Another reason could be low transmission fluid.
They seem to freeze a little in cold weather.

are you serious? its obviously easier to catch a football in hot weather, cold weather makes it harder because your hands are cold and the ball is hard and hurts bad when its thrown fast to you
