Like any other freely moving body in the universe they exert gravity on other bodies around them and they are attracted by other heavenly bodies as well. Each body exerts a force of gravity upon other nearby bodies in space.
Comets tend to have a more elliptical path around the sun, though, than do most other major satellites of the sun.

The comet orbits the sun, just like planets orbit the sun. The comet has enough momentum to avoid falling into the sun, but, not enough momentum to escape the sun's gravitational pull. It's called an orbit, and countless items in the solar system orbit the sun. The comet is just one of thousands of objects that orbit the sun.

im a student at a prep school and i no this, it is because the gravitational pull from the sun attracks comest. how ? they spin round the sun as well as spinning themselves.

Yes they do.... Most of them have elliptical orbits which take them beyond the outer reaches of the solar system and back towards the sun.
