A compass point is lightly magnetised and is attracted the the magnetic north pole, so provided there are no other stronger magnets nearby the compass will always point north, and knowing where north is you can then work out all the other directions.
The needle, or "pointer", of a compass will always point North. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compass
the compass would point north because it Always points north unless you are at the north pole. :)
An 8 point compass also known as a compass rose is a regular compass that shows the eight directions
Hold a magnet in front of it and rotate the magnet around the compass. Then it will not point North/South.

Except near the Earth's magnetic poles, the south pole of a compass points toward the south.
If you point the north side of the compass away from you the compass will point south. Because the needle always points north (magnetism).

Compass Point Shopping Centre was created in 2002.
If a compass has lost its ability to point north, it may be due to being in close proximity to a strong magnetic field or a magnet. You can try recalibrating it by moving it in a figure-eight motion or using a known reference point to realign it. If these methods don't work, the compass may need to be replaced.
