Best Answer

When a dog scuffs the groung with its back feet, it is marking territory or asserting itself to other dogs by leaving behind scent from glands in the paw pads and leaving marks on the ground. This is sometimes done shortly after it has marked territory with urine and or faeces.

Why turtles have claws?

A turtles claws arenormally in the back because they dig with there back legs and it is easier for them to dig with there back legs, like a dog. Where is the fifth toe on the back leg of a dog?

Dogs have dew claws on the front legs but this is actually the 1st claw rather than the 5th (think of it as the equivalent to our thumbs). It is found on the inside surface of the leg, slightly higher up than the other claws. It should be trimmed regularly along with the other claws to prevent overgrowth.

How many claws does a dog have 4 or 5?

4Answer:Dogs have four obvious claws on each paw. But on their frontfeet, there's also a fifth claw, called a "dew claw," on the inside of the leg near the back of the foot. (It's oriented to their other claws much like human thumbs are oriented to our fingers.) So, dogs have five claws on each front foot, but only four on each hind foot. (I just went and examined all my dogs' feet to be sure!)If your dog had a previous owner, they might have had these dew claws removed; many owners do. Also, on long-haired breeds, the dew claw will be unnoticeable under their coat. You have to feel for it to locate it.

What is the purpose of the dew claw?

The dew claw is on the back of the front leg about an inch above the foot of a dog. Some people have them removed when the dogs are puppies. If not, you will feel a nail, just like a dog's toenails, protruding from that area. It is said that it is called the dew claw because it merely touches the dew on the grass as a dog walks.

Do dogs have five claws?

Dogs normally have four regular claws on the front and back legs. Most dogs also have dew claws. Dew claws are the smaller claws that are higher on the dog's legs. Most dogs have them on the front legs, and some have them on the rear, as well. Dew claws on the rear legs are frequently removed when the animal is young. So the average dog have between sixteen and twenty claws, with eighteen being the normal.
