Horses will heavily doze standing up, but for sleep they must sleep laying down. Lighter sleep can be gotton with their legs curled up under them. They need only a few hours of deep REM sleep each week, and they can only get this laying flat out.

A horse sleeps standing up because in the wild they were hunted by the predators. So if they were lying down then it would take them longer to get up to run away so if a predator comes and it is standing up then it can run sooner. Also if a horse feels safe in it environment then it will lie down.

Most of the time, yes. Horses rarely ever sleep laying down, and when they do, it's only for around 15-30 minutes tops. This is a safety precaution and has helped them survive in the wild. It is easier for them to break into a run when they are standing up rather than having to unfold his legs, jump up, and then start running. By then, those few seconds could cost them their lives. While they need the deep REM sleep that they can only get while laying down, they don't need much of it, so they sleep standing up most of the time.

Well, why do humans sleep lying down? It is the same concept.....

*When we sleep, lying down is comfortable for us.....

Horses are comfortable sleeping standing up.

*However, some horses do prefer to sleep lying down.

*If you have a horse that normally sleeps standing up, and you notice him lying down, he could be falling ill, so you should probally call a vet.

Do horses stand sleeping up?

Yes! its another safety feature by mother nature; it takes longer for a horse to stand up and gallop opposed to just gallop. they can dislocate a joint at the top of their legs, this takes pressure off the joints enabling them to stand and sleep. it's not as good as it seems though, horses need a special kind of sleep called REM sleep (rapid eye movement) which is when they are deep in a sleep and are dreaming. however, they can only experience this whilst laying down flat on the floor.
