He probably wants to have some time to himself because he doesn't know what to do. He would rather have it as "just friends" before he gets himself in a relationship. A lot of guys do that, ask to just be friends and then clear their minds and then start a relatiinship again. All you have to do is just wait and hope that he comes back to you. Best of luck!

answer for previous comment: he's either a really good friend, but he's not into to you in that way, but doesn't mind messing round with you in the friendly way OR he does LIKE you, but he doesn't to ruin the relationship he's got A.K.A he's chicken.
