One of the reasons a microwave oven gets hot while in operation is because of hot air blown through the cavity (the cooking area). The magnetron (the microwave generating device) gets hot in operation, and a fan blows air through the cooling fins of this special device to keep it cool. That air gets hot, and is forced through the cavity to exit the oven on a side opposite that where it is drawn in. And the heated air heats the appliance itself.
