surface tension
The reason that your paperclip was able to float on water, was due to the upthrust (The force that acts upwards due to water pressure) being greater than the weight of the weight (the downwards force due to mass x gravity) . The paper clip is less dense than water, and therefore will float.
it affects the surface tension because of its temperture
Paperclips sink in water because they have a higher density. Unlike wood, a paperclip will sink not float.
surface tension is a scalar quantity because it has no specific direction.
surface tension
Because the paperclip is not dense enough to break the surface tension of the water
One hypothesis will have to do with the surface tension of water.
Soapy water does have some surface tension to it but it is very negligible. However pure water have good surface tension due to strong hydrogen bonding. This is the reason a water strider bug can walk and paperclip will float on water.
by measuring it's weight and it's surface tension.

Because of the polarity of the water molecule, hydrogen bonds form between them. This results in the higher surface tension. Oil is nonpolar, so hydrogen bonds do not form between the molecules, so the surface tension is less.
Yes a paper clip is able to float in water. Take a bowl, fill it up to the top with water, take a paper towel and put it into the bowl, let it sit there for 3 seconds...then put the paper clip on it, and slowly remove the towel. This is able to work by Surface tension.Depending on the size, some paperclips can due to the high surface tension of water.
