More then likely it's old and needs replacing. The inner parts have probably worn out, or the springs have gotten old and lost some of their elasticity/ability to spring back.

This may sound silly but try the other socket. Only one of them will be controlled by the wall switch. Also make sure you are not plugged into the dishwasher outlet as well, sometimes theres two under the sink and other times just one and it will have a switched socket and an always on socket so you can connect both.
