Hunters call the deers tail standing up a "flag". White is very visible in the forest and can be seen for long distances. Deer use their tails to signal one another. When a deer is "spooked" or frightened it will raise it's tail to signal other deer in the group or area of danger.

I am not going to say that a deer can not be born without a tail- it would have to be be a deformation or genetic mutation. Deer use their tails as a way to commubicate with each other. A Deer with no tail would be at a great disadvantage and most likely would not survive very long.

Again-it could happen- but it is highly unlikely and is not natural.

What is the first reaction of a frightened white-tailed deer?

Running away with the tail held white underside up is the first reaction of a frightened white-tailed deer [Odocoileus virginianus]. One of the functions of the tail is communication among deer. The tail held upwards indicates alarm, danger, hide, run.

What does it mean when a whitetail deer's tail curls up on it's back?

A White Tailed Deer uses it's tail to communicate to other deer. White can be seen for long distances in the forest. A raised tail usually signals danger and a deer will usually raise it's tail when running from danger. I have watched deer simply raise their tail to signal to other deer that it is there. When in "heat" a Doe will raise it's tail to signal to a Buck that it is ready to mate. Most often, in this situation, the tail is only raised half way. Not all deer raise their tail when running. I have watched mature Bucks run with their tail flat against it's rear. I assume this is because the mature Buck does not want to be seen nor is it concerned about warning other deer.

Why do white tailed deers have hooves?

White-tailed deer have white undersides on their tail so when they are alarmed or in danger their tail is held up as they run. The white patch on the tail signals other deer like a flag that there is danger in that area. When a large herd of deer move during the day they will be in sight of each other, yet spread out. As night falls the deer will form into single file, nose to tail and move together by following the white tail that is in front of them.
