Advent does not necessarily start on December 1st.

In the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and Methodist calendars, Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. Since Christmas is always December 25th, it is not always the same day of the week, so the beginning of Advent can range from November 27th to December 3rd. Does advent always start at the last Sunday of November?

No. It depends upon which day Christmas Day falls. There must be four Sundays in Advent. Therefore, if the first Sunday of Advent falls on December 1st, then the other three will fall on 8th, 15th and 22nd with Christmas being on 25th (Wednesday). However, as Christmas falls this year (2009) on a Friday, there are only three Sundays in December before Friday 25th, namely 6th, 13th and 20th and so, for this year, the first Sunday in Advent had to start in November (29th).Next year (2010) will be the same with the first Sunday of Advent starting on 28th November. In 2011 the first Sunday of Advent starts on Nov 27th, as Christmas falls on a Sunday and, again, there will not be four Sundays in December before Christmas Day.The next time Advent starts on the first Sunday in December will be in 2012 when it falls on Dec 2nd.
