When reacted the resulting compound is Aluminium Oxide, which is an insulator. In simple terms this means the electorns that were previously free to flow in the metal, and conduct an electric current, are now tied up, or bonded to the oxygen it was reacted to. Thus the electrons are no longer free to flow, and so a current can no longer be carried by the material.
