Why does blood have a red colour?

There is a complex protein called hemoglobin (probably haemoglobin, for British eyes).

It is the oxygen carrying molecule carried by the Red Blood Cells (RBCs), which are the main component of the blood.

Typically, veins & arteries will carry a slightly different color of red: Brick Red for the low-oxygenated veinous blood, and a brighter red for the highly-oxygenated arterial blood.

Pulse Oximeters (the red glowing finger prob used in hospitals) can measure the amount of oxygen in a patient's blood by calculating the amount of bright red blood compared to dark red blood. It uses a small laser (the red light).
