The main one is that while the witches the Salem citizens believed in never existed at any point in time, there were actual communists in the world during the Red Scare that were enemies of the US.
It is important to have self-control so that we don't cause harm to ourselves or others. If we don't have self-control, it means we're allowing other people and circumstances control us instead.
The problem with the question is that we rarely see ourselves. We live in a social environment where others like our parents, our siblings, classmates, teachers, coworkers play a part in defining us. And we when we were kids, though we forget this, we tried various roles, various acts and finally settled on the one we have and upon reflection we tell ourselves all the other roles were phoney and the way we are now is our real selves. So what I think matters most may be that we are comfortable with the role, the mask we are wearing, that its working for us and that we know it's just an act.
In the essay "Self-Reliance" by Ralph Waldo Emerson, he suggests that societal norms, fear of failure, and external influences can prevent individuals from trusting themselves. These factors can lead people to doubt their own instincts, conform to the expectations of others, and rely on external validation rather than trusting their own inner wisdom and intuition.

He knows our innermost thoughts and feelings, and he knows us better then we know ourselves.
Prayer--consistency in prayer--is one way to become spiritually stronger. Also the Bible says "faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God." This means that hearing the Bible preached makes us spiritually stronger. This can be done by watching a sermon on TV or in person. This requires consistency as well; consistency in making time for God and His Word every week (in church) as well as making time to read the Word every day to ourselves in devotions.
