Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus. This virus is primarily transmitted through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family and has four distinct serotypes: DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4. Dengue cannot be transmitted by lice. Dengue is only carried by a few different species of mosquitoes which are infected with the Dengue virus. These species include Aedes polynesiensis, Aedes aegypti and Aedes scutellaris.
Dengue fever can be fatal, symptoms are usually more serious after a secondary infection from a different strain of dengue (there are 4 strains of dengue). Secondary infection can lead to Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever which can cause internal bleeding, if the symptoms are not recognized it can ultimately lead to death.
