The Mona Lisa was made by Leonardo DaVinci for himself. He did not make it for a specific patron. He carried this piece with him during the latter part of his life. It is believed that he never thought it was completely finished.
He thought it was funny. Don't you? The idea being that Mona Lisa was so revered that it was about time to poke fun at her and make us realise she is only a portrait of an ordinary woman.
