Everyone doesn't. It is simply the end of the Great Cycle in the Mayan calendar. Some uneducated people have misinterpreted this to mean the end of the world. There have been many predictions about the end of the world, there will be many more. None have been correct to date. (Obviously) When you hear from a several respected scientists that the world will end then you can start to place some credence in the prediction.

Nobody knows, the clock hasn't struck midnight yet, and it is almost the end of the year everyone will have to wait and see and plus they have said on the news about 3 times this year that 'the world will end' but everyone was alive and healthy the next day. So w have to wait until we think the world is going to end or we will know the world is going to end when everything just goes up in flames, massive earthquakes, tornadoes, cyclones, volcano eruptions and whatever else you can think of, so time will tell when the world will end.
