It's because the ex is consumed by thoughts of that other person & is curious if that other person is felling the same way regardless if they admit it or not. It may not be sexual it could be a longing of that lost person's attention that was once there & they miss it.

Their could be literally dozens of reasons your ex would contact you. One thing to keep in mind is what caused the relationship to go south in the first place. Do you want to go through that again. Always remember that you come first when it comes to living your life. Do you trust this person? If you have any doubts about your ex I would advise that you be very cautious in resuming contact with them.
Take your time in thinking this through. One last thing if their has been a history of violence or cruelty then do not reconnect at all.
