The food coloring is more dense than the water.
If you are not planning to eat the fake blood, it does not necessarily require food coloring. You can use any kind of coloring you like. But food coloring is often convenient. If the fake blood is going to be in an actor's mouth (possibly to depict an injury, or possibly to depict vampirism) then food coloring would be the way to go, to avoid poisoning the actor.
I hate food coloring, I am allergic so I have to constantly go out of my way to avoid it causing me to not be able to eat some of my favorite foods.

It means to go out into the world and experience life on your own without being tied to your mother's apron strings.
The strings start to go out of tune.
Food coloring spreads in water but not oil because the molecules that make up the coloring are soluble (able to be dissolved) in water. Water molecules are polar, which means they have an unequal distribution of charge on them. They are like little magnets, with a positive side and a negative side. Other particles with charge will be attracted to these little magnets, resulting in the material dissolving in water. The food coloring dissolves in water because its particles spread out amidst the water molecules due to this attraction. Oil is a non-polar substance, which means that its particles have no charge. Other non-polar materials will dissolve in oil, but a polar substance will not. Hence the separation of oil and water when they are mixed together. Oil is also thicker then water
You end up making a buffoon of yourself. If you're using all natural food coloring, maybe a little irritation and discomfort. If it's not, maybe more irritation and discomfort, but it won't make you go blind or anything of that sort.
No you cannot use food coloring to dye elite socks. As soon as you go to rinse them all the color washes out. Instead you can go buy powdered dye for 2-3 dollars at Walmart, rite aid, ect... OR you could use a tye dye kit an do the colors seperate, or just tye dye them!
