Heating a liquid (or any substance for that matter) causes it to expand, decreasing its density. In cooler liquids, the particles are a little closer to each other, so the liq. is more dense. Dense substances sink to the bottom (you could think of them as being a little heavier due to their higher density)

When upwelling takes place cold water from the deep ocean does what?

Rises to the surface.

Why is the surface of water in a pond cool even on a hot day?

The sun heats the water surface. Warm water has a lighter density than cold water so the warmer water floats on the surface of the colder water.

What are density currents?

A density current is where a warm current floats on top of a cold currentA density current is where a warm current floats on top of a cold currentThe movement of a mass of cold, dense ocean water as it sinks beneath warmer surface water.

Which physical property of lithium is seen during it's reaction with cold water?

It floats on the surface of the water due to its low density.

Why the bottom of a pond is cooler than the top during a hot summer?

The sun heats the water surface. Warm water has a lighter density than cold water so the warmer water floats on the surface of the colder water.

What rises upward from the warm surface?

Sea smoke, also known as steam fog, is produced when cool air passes over warmer water. This can often result in hoar frost or freezing fog.

How is rain formed??

The water on the surface of land and ocean evaporates and turns into water vapor. When the water vapor rises to a certain height, it turns into small water droplets when it is cold.

How can water float on water?

freeze water as ice cubes then put it on water and it floats Liquid fresh water floats on salt water Warm water floats on cold water (water's greatest density is when it is 4 degrees Celsius).

Does hot and cold water mix with food coloring when hot water rises to the top?

I think not because cold water is heaver than hot water and hot water rises to the top and cold drops to the bottom.

When warm and cold water mix what happens to the warm water?

the warm water floats
