Liquid water at its melting point is, unusally compared with most other equilibria, denser than ice at the same temperature. Therefore, since raises in pressure tend toward decreasing the volume of the two phases in equilibrium, the rise in pressure will favor the transition from ice to water, so that the melting will occur more readily and therefore the melting point will be shifted to a lower temperature.
