The earth has a tilt, and when it's winter time, we're at the bottom So imagine if this is the earth: /. And this is the sun: o. If the earth is like this: / o. Then the bottom of the earth isn't getting as much sunlight as the top of the earth. It all depends on the rotation and the tilt of the earth.
