Why does it say thanks to police department and katies and micahs family in paranormal activity is it a ploy to make the film better?

Filmmakers thought it would be scarier if the film was made as a documentary, therefore leading people to believe the events are real. It is purely a marketing strategy. Both Paranormal Activity films are completely fictional.
